Last night was an interesting experience for a New York Libertarian/Conservative. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the wave of Republicans sweeping into the House and Senate, though was disappointed that there weren't even more (notwithstanding that a Democrat Senate run by Harry Reid is a much better tactical outcome than a bare Republican majority incapable of doing much to advance a Libertarian/Conservative agenda.) I also enjoyed watching Republican governors take over formerly deep blue state houses across the country. At the same time, it was annoying and disheartening to see New York, Connecticut, and California entrench themselves even more in Liberal orthodoxy. In New York, the champions of the entitlement state were helped by the pathetic campaign of Carl Paladino at the top of the ticket; there were no changes in Albany, which bodes poorly for productive New Yorkers. The only thing New York pols of both parties know how to do is to buy off the Unions and raise taxes; as more and more productive people leave the state, there can be only one outcome, unless Andrew Cuomo surprises us: bankruptcy looms. From comments made by Jerry Brown in California, the plan there seems to be to get to bankruptcy even faster than New York. As of this post, Connecticut's governor's race is still undecided, so their future is still to be determined.
As a public service to the New York news media, I thought it would be useful to reprint a headline form the last time Liberal orthodoxy and excess brought the city of New York to the brink of insolvency; some variation of this headline will surely appear within the next few years as New York and California insist on denying fiscal reality and eventually hit the wall while a more Conservative House rightfully refuses to cover our bills for us. Taxpayers leaving the state and entitlement recipients increasing in number and demands means we will someday soon be seeing a variation of this headline once again:
Of course, Gerry Ford never said any such thing, but his refusal to bail out New York meant only one thing to the Liberals running the city. Here is the story from the Daily News: Ford to New York: Drop Dead and here is a somewhat more nuanced story from the "paper of record": Infamous ‘Drop Dead’ Was Never Said by Ford.
Just remember, Liberals, like adolescents, do not believe in ever slowing down their spending until they have their credit card taken away.
