I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
Thus far the greatest tragedy and wasted opportunity of Barack Obama's Presidency is his failure to advance the principles for which Martin Luther King Jr devoted, and ultimately gave, his life.
We are more tribal and fractured than we need be. Our "post-racial" President had the opportunity to move us closer toward a post-racial society. Instead he has accentuated the race and class based envies and resentments traditionally used by dishonest politicians to manipulate the crowd.
Perhaps the President will be sufficiently chastened tomorrow to find some humility within himself and reconsider his approach to governance. Perhaps he will begin to appreciate the wisdom of looking past race, religion, and creed to the common humanity we all share. For what else is extreme partisanship but the same tribal impulse that underlies racism and all other -isms? And what else is PC thought except an elevation of ethnicity above our common humanity?
A chastened Obama forced back toward the center of American political life could yet become a successful President. That is my dream on Martin Luther King day.
