New York has seen a lot of rain in the last month. The weather has been cool and damp, Global Warming notwithstanding; it has not felt like summer just yet but perhaps we will have some heat in August. I'm sure that one of these years the climate will change enough to justify Cap and Tax, otherwise how to explain how and why our esteemed Congressmen and women could pass such an atrocity. It must be for the greater good, right? However, in the midst of rain and cold, some drops of sunshine must fall (if you will pardon a mixed metaphor.)
There is plenty of reason for pessimism right now, with an economy that refuses to heat up, and a rising chorus of dissatisfaction with our ahistorical commander-in-chief, but rather than join the chorus of disappointment, I would like to convey a story that offers a more optimistic, sunny even, view on the world.
The primary reason I took last week off from blogging was that my Middle Son was home on a one week leave from the Navy. To celebrate, Oldest Son and his lovely wife came in for the weekend and we took Youngest Son out of summer camp for the weekend. Only Daughter lives in New York so the whole family was together for the first time since Only Daughter's wedding in December. For an extremely liberal town like New York, MS was surprised and pleased with how well he was treated wherever he wnet. Even in New York, it seems, people recognize that our military men and women are doing an important job for us. The icing on the cake occurred yesterday. I drove MS to the airport bright and early in the morning and dropped him off for his flight back to California. As I was driving home (a solid 45 minute drive) I received a text message from him:
MS: Wow, so they saw my military ID and upgraded me to first class without telling me. They also put me thru security in front of the whole line.
SW: That is so great. I love it. *
MS: Hahaha, yeah. I've never flown first class, cool! So much leg room.
Middle Son called us when he arrived in Monterey and told us it was a great trip.
The airlines are often criticized for treating their patrons poorly and have been under a fair amount of stress lately, so I wanted to publicly thank American Airlines for making my son's flight a memorable one.
Blogging will probably be sporadic through July and then, as per the legal requirement for Psychoanalysts, non-existent for August.
*[Note to the NYPD: Of course I pulled over to write back to him. Even though the traffic was extremely light at 7:30 on Sunday I would never dream of texting while driving.]
